Job Description



Location: Durham, NC



SUMMARY:



Ensures the operability of customer machine orders by fabricating and assembling machine modules and prototypes within established specifications, policies, procedures, and schedules.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



- Prepares work to be accomplished by reviewing blueprints, sketches, and verbal information; requesting modifications on incorrect or unclear documentation; planning and laying out necessary sequences to build the model or prototype; communicating with manager on priorities and schedules.

- Creates machine models and prototypes by designing, developing, and fabricating tools, fixtures, and jigs; fabricating needed parts from plastics, sheet metal, glass, and rubber; performing a wide variety of precise, difficult, and highly skilled machining operations; using various measuring instruments to ensure exacting tolerances; utilizing existing parts where applicable; conferring with suppliers on special parts that cannot be made in the Model Shop; determining speeds, feeds, etc.; assembling all parts and modules to complete the machine order.

- Ensures models and prototypes meet customer specifications by assisting engineers in the testing process; analyzing test results and making modifications as required; informing Engineering Supervisor and Project Engineer of any needed modifications to drawings or sketches to ensure proper specifications and tolerances; in some cases, assisting in problem resolution on customer premises, and if necessary; making limited changes; communicating changes back to Engineering Supervisor and Project Engineer for corrective action to future designs.

- Improves the manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability process by making recommendations on changes to fabrication methods or product shape.

- Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient working environment by following established safety procedures and rules; proper operation of equipment; reporting preventive maintenance requirements on equipment; following manufacturers instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; request need for repairs; keeping equipment, tools, and supplies in a neat and orderly fashion; maintaining appropriate supply levels (i.e., fasteners, disposable tools, etc.).

- Maintains technical knowledge by conferring with engineers and suppliers; reviewing technical publications; attending educational seminars/workshops.

- Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related results in a cooperative and supportive manner.

- Internal 95% Engineering, Materials, Manufacturing, Procurement

- External 5% Fastener/Specialty parts/Tooling suppliers



BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:



Education, Experience, and Knowledge



- High school graduate with advanced vocational trade school training and 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Requires proficiency in the operation of lathes, milling machines, measuring tools, hand tools, grinders, sheet metal equipment, and welding and brazing equipment.

- Ability to interpret technical blueprints and drawings. Knowledge of mail processing equipment assembly helpful.



SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



- Clear and concise verbal and written communications; basic computer skills

- Ability to interpret technical blueprints and sketches

- Ability to use machinery (i.e., lathes, milling machines, band saws, grinders, drill presses, welding equipment, etc.) and general and specialized hand tools

- Ability to work to precise tolerances; ability to perform metal fabrication

- Good mathematical skills required for performing trigonometry functions and calculating speeds and feeds

- Good organizational and prioritization skills; ability to meet deadlines

- Good interpersonal/customer relations skills

Requires reading; math; weighing and/or measuring; analyzing data or information and drawing conclusions; creating methodologies for accomplishing a goal; implementing plans and processes



Physical



- Requires walking; sitting; talking and hearing; balancing; stooping and kneeling; reaching with arms and hands; lifting to waist up to 50 pounds (up to 1/3 of time)

- Requires standing; using hands to finger, touch, and feel (up to 2/3 of time)

- Requires close, color, distant, and peripheral vision; good depth perception

- Requires occasional (up to 10 days/year) out-of-town travel

- Work is performed in a controlled manufacturing environment; noise levels within acceptable safety levels; dust prevalent from grinders; fumes and odors from machine coolants and chemicals; work sometimes performed in cramped areas.
