A well-respected independent secondary school is seeking a Head of English to lead its vibrant and dynamic English department from September 2025.

With approximately 600 pupils aged 11–18, the school blends traditional values with modern, innovative teaching practices. The Role
The successful candidate will provide strategic and academic leadership to the English department, overseeing the delivery of a rich and engaging curriculum across Key Stages 3–5. This is a key leadership position with responsibility for driving excellence in teaching and learning, managing a team of enthusiastic teachers, and nurturing a passion for literature and language across the school.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage the English department, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement
*
Teach English across Key Stages 3–5, including GCSE and A-Level
*
Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and departmental strategy
*
Mentor and support the professional growth of team members
*
Promote innovative and engaging approaches to English teaching
*
Organise and support extracurricular activities such as book clubs, writing competitions, and theatre trips
*
Contribute to the wider life of the school, including pastoral responsibilities and whole-school initiatives

The Ideal Candidate Will:
*
Hold a relevant degree and UK teaching qualification (QTS/QTLS or equivalent)
*
Have significant experience teaching English across Key Stages 3–5, including A-Level
*
Demonstrate strong leadership skills and previous experience managing or contributing to a department
*
Be an excellent classroom practitioner with a proven record of academic success
*
Be passionate about literature, language, and inspiring a love of learning
*
Have the ability to foster a collaborative and innovative team culture
