Description

MEP Design Manager – Data centres – Netherlands

Our client is a dynamic, fast growing data centre developer. They have grown rapidly, mainly through acquisitions, over the last few years and now operate 60 different sites across Europe. The organisation is still heavily in acquisition mode and are about to add a further 10-sites to their portfolio with advanced talks for others that may come to fruition over the next 12-18 months

Our client is about to embark on a series of upgrades, improvements, refurbishment and extensions to their existing European sites and they are now seeking a MEP Design Manager to join the team.

Responsibilities

• Lead Electrical Design Coordination
Take ownership of the electrical design scope across all project stages, ensuring alignment with data centre requirements such as redundancy (e.g. N+1, 2N), scalability, and Tier-level compliance (Uptime Institute). Coordinate with mechanical and public health counterparts to ensure integrated and clash-free MEP design delivery.
• Manage Design Consultants & Specialist Subcontractors
Act as the lead interface between the developer and electrical design consultants, specialist vendors (e.g. UPS, generators, switchgear), and main contractors. Review and challenge technical submissions, ensuring consistency with project briefs, performance specs, and UK/EU regulations (e.g., BS7671, IEC standards).
• Technical Assurance & Compliance
Ensure electrical systems are designed to meet strict data centre requirements for uptime, resilience, and energy efficiency (e.g., Power Usage Effectiveness — PUE). Validate that electrical designs comply with British Standards, CDM regulations, grid connection requirements (DNO/IDNO), and fire protection systems integration (e.g., LV cabling separation).
• Support Construction and Commissioning
Provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning phases, ensuring that the as-built electrical systems reflect the design intent. Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and Integrated Systems Testing (IST) for critical electrical infrastructure.
• Risk Management & Programme Support
Identify and manage electrical design and delivery risks — such as long-lead items (e.g., MV/LV switchgear, transformers), supply chain constraints, or grid delays. Work with project planners to ensure electrical design milestones align with procurement, build, and energisation timelines.
