Customs Clearance Specialist – Freight Forwarding (Tilbury, Essex)
Location: Tilbury, Essex
Hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00
Salary: £27,000 - £32,000
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

A well-established, independent freight forwarder with over 40 years of industry experience is seeking a Customs Clearance Specialist to join its Tilbury-based team. Operating from modern offices in the heart of the South East’s shipping hub, the company provides efficient, multimodal transport solutions by sea, air, road, and rail—specialising in Far East ocean imports and UK customs clearances.

The Role

We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Customs Clearance Specialist with experience across all modes of transport (or a strong desire to learn). This is a great opportunity to join a supportive and experienced team and grow within a dynamic and reputable freight forwarding business.

Key Responsibilities

Arrange and manage import clearances for a variety of cargo, ensuring compliance with HMRC regulations

*

Liaise with customers, suppliers, and subcontractors to gather required documentation and information

*

Advise clients on importing procedures, commodity codes, and UK customs requirements

*

Maintain compliance standards as part of an AEO - accredited team

*

Produce Duty and VAT invoices and calculate relevant taxes when required

*

Work closely with the operations team to ensure timely and accurate clearance processes

Ideal Candidate

You will have:

*

2+ years’ experience at a small or medium-sized freight forwarding company

*

Hands-on experience with CDS, ideally including deep-sea and European road freight entries

*

Confidence navigating UK Trade Tariff and GOV UK customs resources

*

Understanding of FTA, Origin & Preference rules

*

Familiarity with CNS and Destin8 (CCS-UK experience is a plus)

*

Experience using Multi-freight software (preferred but not essential)

*

Strong attention to detail and communication skills

*

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel

*

A team-player mindset and a friendly, professional manner

*

Strong English and mathematical ability
