Lead Project Design Engineer 

A leading engineering business is seeking an experienced and hands-on Lead Project Design Engineer to drive the full lifecycle development of complex, regulated mechanical systems. This is a high-impact role ideal for a technically strong engineer with a track record of delivering projects from concept through to manufacture and support.

You’ll be joining a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team delivering mission-critical solutions for high-profile international programmes, operating within a highly regulated and standards-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities of the Lead Project Design Engineer:
Lead end-to-end mechanical design and development projects from initial concept to delivery.

Oversee both new product development and enhancements to existing product ranges.

Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and BOMs using Creo (Pro/Engineer) or similar software.

Manage engineering data using Product Data Management (PDM) systems and enforce strict change control processes.

Liaise with certification bodies and standards organisations to ensure compliance with technical regulations.

Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal process improvements.

Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, quality and commercial teams to support production and solve technical challenges.

Administer technical documentation and support data management requirements related to international contracts.

Lead component re-designs to address obsolescence and support configuration management processes.

Ideal Candidate of the Lead Project Design Engineer:
Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Strong background in mechanical design for regulated or safety-critical systems.

Proficient in 3D CAD tools, with a solid understanding of PDM systems.

Familiar with relevant international standards and regulatory frameworks.

Proven leadership in technical project delivery and team mentorship.

Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Experience
Background in defence, aerospace, medical, or similarly regulated industries.

Understanding of documentation and data control associated with international programmes or government contracts.

Experience with product integration into complex systems or platforms.

Knowledge of component design involving motors, battery systems, or airflow management.

What’s on Offer
£50,000–£58,000 per annum depending on experience
