Head of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

📍 Location: Southend-on-Sea
🗓️ Start Date: January 2026
💼 Contract: Full-time, Permanent
💰 Salary: MPS/UPS + TLR (dependent on experience)

The Role

A thriving secondary school in Southend-on-Sea is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and talented Head of MFL to lead its Languages department from January 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced subject leader or an ambitious MFL teacher ready to step up into leadership. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing the MFL curriculum, raising attainment, and inspiring students to discover the value and joy of learning another language.

Key Responsibilities

*

Lead and manage the MFL department, providing clear vision and strategic direction.

*

Design, deliver, and evaluate a high-quality curriculum in French, Spanish and/or other modern languages.

*

Support, mentor and develop MFL staff to ensure high standards of teaching and learning.

*

Promote language learning through enrichment opportunities, trips and cultural events.

*

Monitor student progress and implement strategies to raise achievement.

*

Contribute to whole-school improvement and work collaboratively with other curriculum leaders.

Person Specification

*

QTS and a degree in a Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish preferred).

*

A proven track record of outstanding classroom practice and raising attainment.

*

Experience of leading a department or clear potential to take on a leadership role.

*

Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.

*

A commitment to inclusive, inspiring language teaching.

*

Ability to motivate both staff and students to achieve their potential.
