The Role

A well-regarded secondary school in Southend-on-Sea is seeking an inspiring and committed Head of Religious Education to lead its RE department from January 2026.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced subject leader or ambitious RE teacher looking to step up into leadership. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping the curriculum, leading a committed team, and ensuring every student develops critical thinking, respect, and ethical understanding through Religious Education.

Key Responsibilities

*

Lead and manage the Religious Education department, setting a clear strategic vision and direction.

*

Develop and deliver an engaging and inclusive RE curriculum across KS3–KS5.

*

Support and mentor staff to ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and outcomes.

*

Promote reflective and respectful dialogue, encouraging students to explore different faiths, beliefs, and values.

*

Monitor progress, analyse data, and implement strategies to raise achievement.

*

Contribute to the wider Humanities faculty and whole-school improvement priorities.

Person Specification

*

QTS and a degree in Religious Education, Philosophy, Theology, Humanities or related subject.

*

Proven record of outstanding classroom practice and raising attainment.

*

Experience of departmental leadership or clear potential to lead.

*

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

*

A passion for inclusive and values-driven education.

*

Strong organisational skills and the ability to inspire both staff and students.
