The Head Teacher and SENCo in Preston are seeking a committed and compassionate Pupil Support Worker to join our team from October 2025 for the full academic year. This is a vital role within our inclusive and nurturing school, providing targeted support for children across the primary age range.

About the Role

Working closely with our Family Support Worker, class teachers, SENCO and wider pastoral team, you will support pupils who are vulnerable due to social, emotional, mental health (SEMH) needs, low attendance, or significant life events such as bereavement or trauma. You will help pupils re-engage with learning and feel safe, seen and supported within school.

This role blends elements of both pupil and family support, focusing on developing strong, trusted relationships that enable progress both in and out of the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs

Support children returning to school after time off (e.g. due to illness, anxiety, or school refusal), helping them reintegrate into class routines

Work with children affected by bereavement, trauma, or emotional distress, offering a calm and empathetic presence

Monitor and track attendance concerns, working with the Family Support Worker and SLT to implement supportive strategies for families

Help children manage behaviour, regulate emotions, and build resilience

Liaise with external professionals and attend multi-agency meetings where appropriate

Maintain accurate records and contribute to pastoral and safeguarding plans

Support whole-school wellbeing initiatives, clubs or interventions

Champion the school’s Catholic ethos and provide a safe, inclusive space where every child feels valued

We are looking for someone who:

Has experience supporting vulnerable pupils in a school or similar setting

Understands SEMH and trauma-informed approaches

Can confidently support children who struggle with attendance or emotional regulation

Is able to build strong relationships with both children and families

Has a calm, empathetic, and resilient approach to behaviour and wellbeing

Is an effective team player who communicates clearly and professionally

Understands the importance of safeguarding and can maintain confidentiality at all times

In return, we offer:

A warm, inclusive and caring school community

A dedicated staff team and excellent pastoral support systems

Opportunities for professional development and training

The chance to make a real difference to the lives of children who need it most
