Learning Support Assistant – Making a Difference Beyond the Classroom

Location: Clay Cross and surrounding areas
Salary: £24,763 – £26,407 annually (Grade 8, points 12–15)
Contract: Full-time, fixed term for 39 weeks per year
Start Date: Immediate start available
Positions Available: Multiple openings

Are you someone who thrives on helping young people overcome challenges and reach their full potential? We’re looking for dedicated, proactive Learning Support Assistants to provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with complex behavioural and learning needs — not just in the classroom, but out in the community too.

This is a unique and rewarding role that goes beyond traditional school support. You’ll work across a variety of settings including schools, community hubs, and sometimes even pupils’ homes — wherever young people learn best. Every day brings a new opportunity to help students build resilience, confidence, and trust.

About the Setting

You'll be part of an alternative provision team supporting pupils who haven’t thrived in mainstream education, often due to Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. These young people may face difficulties with emotional regulation, impulse control, and social interaction. That’s why your creativity, patience, and flexibility will be key.

In this role, you’ll combine academic support with enrichment activities — especially sports and outdoor learning — which are central to developing confidence, engagement, and positive behaviour.

What You’ll Be Doing

*

Providing personalised academic and emotional support to pupils, one-to-one or in small groups

*

Travelling to different settings including schools, local community hubs, and pupils' homes

*

Supporting engagement through tailored activities, including outdoor education and physical activities

*

Acting as a positive role model, using de-escalation strategies and encouraging positive behaviour choices

*

Working closely with teachers, leaders, and families to implement individual learning and behaviour plans

*

Helping pupils navigate transitions, build relationships, and engage in social and enrichment opportunities

*

Adapting your approach to meet pupils’ individual needs across a variety of environments

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who:

*

Holds a full UK driving licence, has access to a vehicle, and holds business insurance

*

Has GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths

*

Brings experience and confidence in managing behaviour using trauma-informed approaches

*

Has a passion for sports or outdoor learning and knows how to use them to connect with young people

*

Communicates well and builds trust with pupils, families, and colleagues

*

Is resilient, adaptable, and ready to work flexibly in different environments

Desirable (but not essential)

*

Training in behaviour management techniques (e.g. Team Teach, Restorative Practice)

*

A valid First Aid qualification

*

Experience working in SEMH, youth work, or alternative education settings

*

Ability to deliver creative, physical, or engaging learning activities

*

Strong problem-solving and reflective practice skills

Why Join Us?

By becoming part of our team, you’ll be playing a key role in giving every young person the chance to succeed. We offer:

*

A competitive salary between £24,763 and £26,407 per year

*

A varied and dynamic role where your impact is visible every day

*

Ongoing professional development and training tailored to your needs

*

A supportive, creative working environment with a shared commitment to young people’s progress
