Role: Field Service & Repair Engineer / Assembler

Location: Bedford (with travel to customer sites, UK & abroad)

Salary: Up to £45,000

A leading manufacturer based in Bedford, specialising in the design, manufacture, and supply of advanced industrial braking technologies. Our products include disc brake calipers, thrusters, flexible couplings, clutch couplings, shaft assemblies, and locking devices — serving a wide range of industries worldwide.

Role Overview

The Field Service & Repair Engineer / Assembler will be responsible for managing customer repairs and providing on-site service for /supplied brakes, clutches, and couplings. This includes diagnosing faults, carrying out scheduled maintenance, and ensuring optimal product performance both at the Bedford facility and at customer sites.

The role requires flexibility to travel within the UK and abroad for service visits. When not engaged in service or repair duties, the successful candidate will undertake product assembly work.

Key Responsibilities

Service & Repair

Manage customer returns process to meet annual repair sales targets and deliver on time in line with customer expectations.

Strip and survey returned items; produce detailed reports on required parts, labour, and costings for repair viability.

Rebuild customer returns to “as new” standard by agreed deadlines.

Carry out service work at Bedford and at customer sites across the UK and internationally.

Support Sales & Engineering with service, commissioning, and technical support.

Assist Quality & Inspection teams to maintain ISO 9001 standards and achieve on-time delivery of processes.

Assembly

Review the priority build board and select parts kits for assembly.

Establish assembly operations from parts lists, working instructions, and engineering drawings.

Verify kit accuracy and escalate discrepancies to Stores or Supervisors.

Safely operate overhead travelling gantry crane and apply correct slinging procedures for large items.

Assemble and test products to specification using tools (air guns, spanners etc.), ensuring cleanliness and precision.

Report component errors, tooling issues, or assembly challenges to supervision.

Maintain safety standards and use PPE at all times; report health & safety concerns.

Support ISO 9001 requirements and contribute to continuous improvement (ABS).

Skills & Experience

Stable working history is essential.

Experience in mechanical/hydraulic service or maintenance engineering.

Proven ability to manage processes and meet delivery deadlines.

Experience working independently on customer installations.

Strong reporting skills with proficiency in MS Word and Excel.

Ability to interpret and work from engineering drawings.

Good manual dexterity and assembly/building experience.

Excellent attention to detail.

Flexible, hardworking, and able to prioritise effectively under pressure.

A proactive team player with a calm, efficient approach.

Minimum / Physical Requirements

Regular lifting/moving of up to 5 kg.

Frequent lifting/moving of up to 10 kg.

Ability to stand, walk, sit, lift, and use hands during normal duties.

Close vision and focus adjustment required for detailed work.
