Residential Support Worker
Location: Barnsley
Client: Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council
Sector: Children and Family Services
Salary: £15.84 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract Type: Temporary (3 months)
Hours: Up to 37 hours per week (Early: 7:00 AM–2:30 PM | Late: 2:00 PM–10:00 PM | Waking nights)
Shift Pattern: Includes weekend and shift work
Role Overview
Join Barnsley’s Short Breaks Service as a Residential Support Worker, providing essential care and support to children and young people with additional needs, complex health conditions, and learning disabilities. This in-home role supports day-to-day living, emotional development, and positive outcomes through a safe, nurturing, and child-centred approach.
Key Duties May Include

Acting as a key link worker for individual children and young people
• Providing physical, emotional, educational, and social care and support
• Administering medication in line with regulations and internal policies
• Building positive relationships with families, professionals, and the local community
• Supporting care planning, assessments, and participation in review meetings
• Promoting children's rights, safeguarding, and advocacy
• Completing accurate electronic records and contributing to reports
• Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, safety, and wellbeing within the home
• Assisting with risk assessments and safe moving and handling practices
• Supporting colleagues across other residential units when requiredKey Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality, person-centred residential care
• Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety standards
• Promote emotional resilience, wellbeing, and independence among young people
• Contribute to team objectives and the wider service plan
• Collaborate with multi-agency professionals and attend relevant meetingsWhat They're Looking For

Level 3 qualification in a relevant area or willingness to complete within 12 months
• Experience working in residential settings with children or young people with complex needs/disabilities
• Understanding of safeguarding, child development, and relevant legislation
• Knowledge of OFSTED standards and the Five Outcomes for Children
• Previous multi-agency working experienceSkills & Competencies

Ability to respond calmly and constructively to challenging behaviour
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• IT literacy for record-keeping and communication
• Team player with the ability to work independently and take initiative
• Practical life skills that can be shared with children
• Commitment to equality, confidentiality, and child-focused careOther Requirements

Enhanced DBS required
• Flexible to work early, late, waking night, and weekend shifts
• Willingness to undertake training and continuous professional development
• Ability to travel when necessary for the role
