Role Profile: Science Technician


The post holder will provide technical support in a busy Science Department teaching years 5 to 11. The Science technician plans, prepares and maintains equipment and resources for experiments across all three Science subjects.

The Science Technician will support the Science Department by setting a high standard of professional conduct, enabling it to run smoothly, and ensuring that the children are safe, learning and happy.

effective and high-quality classroom teaching from Year 6 to GCSE and ensure all pupils reach their potential through the delivery of high quality teaching and learning alongside effective monitoring, assessment and target setting.  The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered by the latest Teachers' Pay and Conditions document. It may be modified by the Headteacher, with your agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title.

Key Accountabilities

To maintain a clean and safe working environment promptly escalating any safety concerns to the Head of Department
Prepare for and set up equipment for experiments, demonstrations. Class practical work, assessments and examinations.
Ensure that all equipment, chemical solutions and other materials are left / stored in a safe and secure condition and ready to use.
Be aware of and comply with all departmental /school procedures with regards to Health and safety at work. Employees have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work to take reasonable care to avoid injury to themselves or to others by their work activities, and to cooperate with employers and others in meeting statutory requirements.
Contribute to safe working practises assessing risks for technician activities; review and update risk assessments regularly.
Assist in the safe disposal of materials and out of date stock
Ensure safe storage of radioactive materials, chemicals and the disposal of chemical and other waste.
Wash and clean all laboratory equipment including the neutralisation and cleaning up of spillages
Assist in the maintenance of records of equipment and materials planning ahead to ensure that the necessary equipment and resources are in working order/in stock and available for use as required.
Monitor stock levels and place orders/receive and unpack goods safely and securely.
Assist both the teachers and children with practical work and demonstrations
Assist in the preparation for Science exams and assessments
Provide administrative support to the Science Department including but not limited to preparing worksheets, photo copying etc.
Support the growth and development of the Science department
Provide general assistance, as required, to ensure the smooth running of the department.
Other professional duties

Promoting the Health, Safety and Wellbeing of Pupils and Staff
At all times the Science Technician will:
Maintain awareness of, and comply with, the Schools H&S policy
Where appropriate, conduct and document risk assessment in his/her area of responsibility
Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken is not identified and the post holder shall be required to carry out whatever the Headteacher shall instruct, commensurate with training and experience.
