Description/Qualifications:

The Technical Laboratory Assistant position at Salem Health allows your unique and versatile talents to be put to use in a role that is challenging and rewarding. Your customer service oriented philosophy along with strong organizational skills will assist us in maintaining our unwavering commitment to provide exceptional patient care.



The Technical Laboratory performs specimen collection and/or support functions in multiple disciplines of laboratory services in settings both within the hospital as well as remote locations managed by the laboratory services.  Specific disciplines include phlebotomy, specimen management and handling, microbiology, hematology, chemistry, blood bank, histology, cytology, and referral testing. Additionally, the Technical Laboratory Assistant independently performs and reports waived and moderately complex laboratory procedures under the oversight of a medical technologist and exercises proper judgment in the case of questionable or abnormal results



 



Core Responsibilities



Organizes, prioritizes, performs testing and reports results within minimum turnaround times.



Works diligently under varying workloads and is able to resolve problems.



Assists with the phone as needed and answers promptly while maintaining phone etiquette.



Receives, records and relays messages accurately and in a timely fashion.



All specimens are processed promptly upon receipt in the laboratory or department. Critical samples (Code/Trauma/Priority) are processed or collected immediately. 



Follows infection control procedures to ensure a safe work and patient environment.



Follows prescribed safety techniques to maintain personal, co-worker and patient safety (wears and appropriately uses personal protective equipment as required.)



Background/Expertise



Requires graduation from High School or a GED.



Requires 3 years of experience in the role of a Laboratory Assistant or a minimum of three quarters of college level course work that includes laboratory activities, or two years of related experience in either a clinical, medical office, or research setting.



Familiarity with medical terminology is strongly preferred in this position.



Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital Information Systems is desirable.



Must be capable of sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of



Lifting generally consists of items weighing less than 40 pounds.



Requires regular exercise of independent judgment and decision-making skills
