Job Summary



The Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Birth Center must possess in- depth knowledge and clinical expertise in healthy pregnancy and the complications of pregnancy.

The CNS has responsibilities for clinical practice, leadership, education, consultation, research and is accountable to the Director of Perinatal Services. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a positive approach to challenges with an ability and passion to practice evidence-based nursing and educate staff to the highest level of nursing care.

Outstanding communication skills and an ability to effectively adapt to an ever-changing clinical environment required.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication style with the entire interdisciplinary team.



Required Qualifications



Minimum three years of RN experience in High Risk Birth Center including all aspects of perinatal care

Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California

Active American Heart Association CPR certification

Current NRP certification

Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, or licensure / certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline

Masters Degree in nursing or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training

In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources

Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting

Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution

Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required

Excellent skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey highly complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

AWHONN Intermediate FHR

Prior CNS experience in a High Risk Birth Center



Licensure/Certification



Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California

Active American Heart Association CPR certification

Work Environment

Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture.

Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility.

Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.

Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.

Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
