Brief Description of Duties/Responsibilities:



Southern invites applications from individuals who believe in the mission of public higher education and are committed to outstanding teaching and scholarship. Successful candidates will be disciplinary scholars devoted to a student-centric approach.



The Sociology Department is seeking to hire a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor in Sociology, effective August 2020. The successful candidate will have a record of research and teaching, with specialization in environmental sociology with emphasis on climate change and social justice. The successful candidate will enter as a member of a cluster initiative in Climate Change/Blue Economy intended to foster collaboration with colleagues in contributing disciplines.



Students at Southern express a variety of sociological interests that complement faculty expertise in criminology, urban sociology, and intersectional approaches to contemporary social problems. The department also serves popular concentrations, including Womens Studies, Criminal Justice, and Social Science and Medicine.



The candidate must be committed to teaching within a vibrant public liberal arts and sciences environment and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, mentoring and research with undergraduates. All faculty at SCSU share in academic advising and participate in department/university service. Teaching load is 12 credit-hours per semester.



Tenure-track faculty at SCSU are expected to pursue scholarship in their area of expertise. These activities include, but are not limited to, research leading to publication of books and/or articles in academic and professional journals, efforts to seek funding in support of research and teaching needs, and contributions to workshops and conferences.

Required Qualifications:



The candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Sociology by the time of appointment. The candidate must show evidence of ability to teach university level courses and a strong potential for scholarly activity.

Preferred Qualifications:



Preference may be given to candidates who have experience teaching a range of courses in sociology, environmental sociology, and social justice who can contribute to teaching in our core curriculum and who have an established record of scholarship.
